Description
1st-2nd century AD. A fragmentary marble plaque with raised border, figure of Cupid modelled in the half-round with wreath in the right hand. 403 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). Property of a late London gentleman and thence by descent, 1960s-1970s. The Roman Cupid originated in Greek mythology as Eros, the Greek god of love. Some myths make him a primordial god, whilst in others he is the son of Aphrodite.
