Description
5th-7th century AD. A cast bowl mount in the form of a bird; the head and curved neck D-shaped in section expanding to a flat piriform panel with champ levé enamel decoration: a red field with three yellow panels. Cf. the beast-headed bowl mounts from Ipswich in West, S. A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Finds From Suffolk, East Anglian Archaeology 84, Ipswich, 1998 item 69(1). 6.35 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). Found Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, UK. Bowl mounts were produced in British areas but are often found in the graves of high-ranking Anglo-Saxons; the bowls on which they appeared may have played some part in the exchange of prestige goods in post-Roman Britain.
