Description
11th century AD. A cast mount of Williams's Class A Type I, a variant with low-relief addorsed beast-heads to the plaque; void and bar to the lower edge, loop to the apex, central piercing and lateral pierced lobes. Cf. Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts, York, 1997, p.27. 7.72 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). Property of a Suffolk lady; formerly in the Deago collection, by descent from the vendor's mother. The mount is unusual in not having a rear ledge at the lower edge but a separate bar. The lateral piercings are also exceptional for this type, although they are found on some Class C mounts.
