Description
15th-16th century AD. A flat-section octofoil plaque with large mounting peg to the reverse; the face inscribed with a heater shield blazoned: quarterly 1st & 4th: barry of three vair; 2nd & 3rd: a saltire vair, associated with Henry Beaumont of Gittisham, Devon. 24 grams, 31mm (1 1/4"). Property of a Middlesex gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. The heraldry of the shield is crudely executed with slight curvature to the straight edges. The second and third quarters contain three rows of 'arcading' with hatched infill, similar to the standard depiction of the fur 'vair' in heraldic devices. The first and fourth quarters show a six- and eight-pointed sunburst or saltire. The arms closely resemble those of Beaumont which appear in the Gittisham church (Quarterly 1st & 4th: Barry of six vair and gules; 2nd & 3rd: Gules, a saltire vair), but the latter are barry of six (not three) and the saltires are also shown in vair. The small scale of the stud may have encouraged the artist to simplify.
