Place Published: Seattle

Date Published: c.1898
Description:
Four cards, 11x8½", headed, "The Direct Route to Atlin and Yukon Gold Fields."Â
Each features a view of the White Pass and Yukon Railroad and provides scenes of the railway in various states of completion. The advertisement states that "the railway is completed and in operation from Skaguay, Alaska, to Lake Bennett, B[ritish]. C[olumbia]." The photographs were taken by Swedish-born Eric A. Hegg. Hegg (1867-1948), among the most famous of the early Alaska photographers, who arrived in the area in 1897. Traveling the Klondike River on a boat with a darkroom, Hegg captured the life of miners and residents of Skagway [Alaska], Bennett [British Columbia], and Dawson City [Yukon] during the Klondike Gold Rush, 1897 to 1901. In addition to photography, Hegg, along with his brother, did some prospecting in the area, but never struck it rich.
