Description
DESCRIPTION: A Renaissance Revival style country Victorian burl walnut fall front writing desk. The form consisting of a one drawer stand resting on finely turned ball and shaft legs. The burl walnut fall board opens to reveal eight pigeonhole cupboards and a central drawer. The top with a simple curved molding. Such desks were very common throughout central Pennsylvania. In the 1970s, many lost their tops as the bases were considered more salable. This is a rare survival of an unaltered example of a country Pennsylvania desk. PROVENANCE: By descent to the consignor from the family of Robert Fleming (1801-1874), Pennsylvania Senator in 1836 and 1839. MEASUREMENTS: 24" x 17-3/4" x 45-1/4" high. CONDITION: Wear consistent with age.
