DESCRIPTION: A walnut Victorian Renaissance Revival armchair stamped the splat "S of P" probably for Senate of Pennsylvania. PROVENANCE: By descent to the consignor. Per family history, owned by the late Pennsylvania State Senator Robert Porter Allen (1835-1890), Pennsylvania Senator in 1875 to 1878. Senator Allen was born on February 6, 1835 in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He studied law under General Robert Fleming (Pennsylvania Senator in 1836 and 1839) and then entered Harvard Law School where he graduated in 1858. He served in the Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. He married Senator Fleming's daughter Ellen E. Fleming on January 5, 1864. Allen died on December 4, 1890. See Lots 732, 733 and 735 for items belong to Senator Fleming. MEASUREMENTS: 24-1/4" x 21-1/4" x 40-3/4" high. CONDITION: Refinished/restored in the 1971. Wear consistent with age.
