"Bailarina" 25" x 20 1/2" Signed lower right, "Fransisco Ribera". Small areas of missing paint . A young female dancer laces her toe shoes in her dressing room, sitting on a small wooden bench. Behind her is a painted screen with a drape over it. The frame is a special matte finish with black molding made to order for this piece has an undulated surface alternating with some flat areas. A narrow gold filet is adjacent to the piece. Ribera studied at San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He completed his training after two years with a scholarship at El Paular and in Granada. In the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid, he earned awards in 1928 and 1930. In the thirties he produced his brilliant posters, with which he won the Fine Arts Circle Masked Ball poster competition in Madrid in 1931 and he was chosen to illustrate the International Fair in Barcelona in 1933. After the Civil War, he continued to reap success at National Fine Arts Exhibitions (1941, 1948 and 1950), and he began his teaching career, occupying since 1945 "the natural drawing chair" at Barcelona's School of Fine Arts, which he later directed between 1964 and 1972.
