Approx. image size 15 x 9, 3/23 x 15, 3 cm.Gregorio Ferro Requeijo (Santa Maria de Lamas (La Coruña) 1742 - Madrid, 23 January 1812) was a Spanish painter. At fifteen he moved to Madrid, where he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando de Antonio Mengs's hand. Then he went to Rome to complete his training where he won several awards. Academy earned a pension which was enhanced by his mentor, Mengs, from his own pocket. Before leaving Rome had already made some drawings for the Court, being elected in 1781 Academician of San Fernando by a picture of the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian. In 1788 he was appointed Deputy Director of the Academy in place of Francisco Bayeu, to become its Director of Painting in 1791 after the resignation of Francisco de Goya. In October 1804 the Academy nominated him as Director and so the King Carlos IV approved on November 4. He made many works in the Royal Sites and Palacios, especially in Madrid and Aranjuez, including several frescoes in the Royal Palace and several paintings with religious themes in churches of the Court, and other minor works in the Murcia province of Cuenca and especially Galicia.
