Description
comprising 46 vol., mixed editions or impressions, but many first editions, photographic plates and illustrations, text illustrations, original cloth or leatherette, dust-jackets, many with mounted colour illustrations, some rubbing, a few with fraying/chipping to spines ends, some spines darkened, but overall a very good, attractive run, small to large 8vo, Warne , 1921-74. An excellent set of the entire Wayside and Woodland series, began in 1895 to meet the increasing demand for conveniently sized, well illustrated pocket guides to flora & fauna. As prized equally for their aesthetic appeal as their informative charm, these guides proved immensely popular with many becoming regarded as leading or definitive studies in their fields. They also attracted important and occasionally surprising contributors, most famously perhaps Beatrix Potter's illustrations for Findlay's Wayside and Woodland Fungi (1967), but perhaps lesser known is Enid Blyton's editor-ship of Birds of the Wayside and Woodland (originally 1936, the issue here 1941) for the spin-off series Wayside Pocket Guides , which also featured illustrations by Joan Lupton. Several of the titles present were also never reissued beyond the first impression, and are now highly sought after, such as Linssen's 2 vol. Beetles of the British Isles (1959) and Southwood & Leston's Land and Water Bugs (1959).
