first edition, first issue with title dated 1790, 12 hand-coloured engraved plates by J.R. Schellenberg, some printed in red or green, title browned, text a little foxed and stained but plates generally clean, modern morocco backed boards, new endpapers, [Great Flower Books p.151; Nissen BBI 2156], folio, Zurich, Ziegler & Son , 1790. Important monograph on amaranths. Willdenow (1765-1812) was the founder of the nineteenth-century Berlin school of botany, Director of the Berlin Botanical Gardens, and a very influential figure, Alexander von Humboldt being one of his pupils.
