The Strike at Shane's / Gold Mine Series No. 2 / Sequel to “Black Beauty” / A Prize Story of Indiana / Written for, and revised, copyrighted and published by the American Humane Education Society (George T. Angell, President, Boston [1893]). First Edition in original pictorial wrappers.  91pp.+ 9 unnumbered pages written by Angell.

This is both a classic of the animal welfare cause, being the American sequel to the 1877 British novel which electrified that reform movement on both sides of the Atlantic, and a literary cornerstone in its own right, now believed to be the anonymous first novel of Indiana author, naturalist, and wildlife photographer Gene Strattong-Porter, written when she was 30, a decade before her “Song of the Cardinal”. Generally seen in a cloth cover edition, it is especially scarce in wrappers, with the Humane Society journal advertised on the inside rear cover and  supporting material by Angell (see the listing above for his 1891 letter) on behalf of the SPCA cause.
