Description:
Lovell, Mary E. Outline of the History of the Women’s Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, from its Foundation, April 14, 1869 to December 31, 1899” Original wrappers. 64pp.
The Women’s auxiliary of the male-dominated SPCA in Philadelphia took charge of the city’s dog Pound, instituting humane treatment of the 100,000 stray dogs who found shelter there during the Society’s decades of service. Lovell, the author of this brief history, was a feminist Temperance crusader with a yen for many reform causes, who opposed American prize-fighting as a brutal blood sport and even petitioned the Pope to use Church influence to halt Spanish bull-fighting. A surprisingly rare imprint. WorldCat locates only one institutional holding, at the University of Rochester.
