Description:
Carte-de-Visite photograph of Anton Rubinstein (Ch. Reutlinger, Paris, ca. 1870) With handwritten note on verso above Reutlinger’s logo: “Salle Erand, Paris, April 13, 1870. Wednesday”.
Though he composed numerous operas, piano concertos and symphonies, Rubinstein had his greatest impact on musical history as founder of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and as musical educator, the teacher of Tchaikovsky who also inspired a young Rachmaninoff. A virtuoso pianist, he was first encouraged at age 11 by Chopin and Liszt after they heard his Paris performance at the Salle Erard concert room in 1840. This picture was probably owned by someone who heard Rubinstein perform there again –three decades later. Two years after that, Rubinstein toured America for the Steinway Piano Company, giving 215 concerts in 239 days.
