Description
Produced by the Elliot Publishing Company of San Francisco for the "Vancouver Daily and Weekly World" in 1890, this map was the first bird's eye view of the city. In the days before the airplane, this was the only method of producing such a panoramic picture of Vancouver. As the map illustrates, the foundations of a sophisticated metropolis had been laid during the four years since incorporation. By 1890, the old Granville Townsite (Gastown) located in the left centre of the map, had become densely occupied. The C.P.R. Townsite, location of the railway station and wharves, the Hotel Vancouver and numerous other large establishments, was quickly emerging as the new downtown. Hastings and Granville Streets, which were served by a street car line and bordered by major buildings, clearly were the streets of the future. The cameos of buildings placed around the map provide a detailed picture of the substantial construction which had occured over the previous four years. New residential districts were also in evidence by 1890. There were, in addition to the original Hastings Mill Wharf, several New Wharves and many ships using the harbour. The False Creek shoreline has already become the home for numerous sawmills and related businesses. Measurements: 37"W X 23"H
