Description
The mask is virtually encrusted and studded with dozens and dozens of cabochon coral, turquoise, and lapis stones. The 'teeth' are of a white substance - perhaps porcelain, glass, or shell. The metal is quite rigid and appears to be copper. The mask is approx. 12" x 11".It has both a wire for hanging across the back and a heavy ring at the top. We do not know if this mask was ever meant to be worn in a ceremonial ritual or was always designed to be hung and displayed. We have been told that this mask is of Dharmapala - protector of the Buddhist faith. The metalwork is very 3-dimensional and exhibits signs of hand-hammering. The eye areas are of a silver colored metal that may be inlaid or laminated to the copper base. The image of this god has been used frequently on stamps from Mongolia. The eye holes and nostrils pierce the metal.
