These seven medals were manufactured in commemoration of important events of the Soviet space program: the dogs Belka and Strelka, Yuri Gagarin, Space for Children and Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky

These seven medals commemorate important events of the Soviet space program. Three medals show the portrait of Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) in a space helmet with the letters ‘CCCP’. Gagarin was the first man in space. The reverse of the Gagarin medals display a female figure on a tall column. This lot further contains two medals that were minted in 1990 for the 30th anniversary of the space flight of the two dogs Belka and Strelka. The dogs were the first living creatures that successfully completed a full orbital flight. The heads of the dogs are cast in high relief. The reverse of these medals honors the 30th anniversary of Lunokhod, a Soviet robotic lunar rover that explored the moon within the scope of the Luna-program. One additional medal reads in English ‘SPACE FOR CHILDREN‘ and depicts two children in space suits on the one side and an athletic figure flying into space on the other side. The seventh medal of the lot displays the portrait of Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky, who is regarded the founder of the Russian theory of spaceflight. Verso of this medal are a space station, the flag of the USSR and inscriptions in Cyrillic.

The seven medals are minted with the Moscow Mint mark ‘A.W.’ and the initials of the two medalists Shehoyan and Ognev. The Tsiolkovsky medal bears the signature of the portrayed. The medals are in very good condition with almost no traces of wear; merely the Tsiolkovsky medal displays some slight traces of age and tiny malachite staining. The medals are each 51 mm in diameter.
