The present print is a second artist’s proof by Nan Goldin. In the 1990s, the US-American artist had a DAAD grant for a stay in Berlin, where she documented people from the gay, drug, artist and transvestite scene. The present motif is an impressive example of that period and captivates through its expressiveness and color intensity. Nan Golding’s groundbreaking works have been described as a modern interpretation of Caravaggio.
The C-print is signed and numbered lower center ‘Nan Goldin A.P.II’. It is also titled, inscribed and dated lower left ’Misty and Joey at Hornstrasse. Berlin 1992‘. Besides, there is a dedication of the artist upper left ‘To Rolf [heart icon] N.’. The image size measures 40 x 60.5 cm and the Alu-Dibond plate measures 45 x 62.5 cm.
Nan Goldin (b. 1953)
Nan Goldin was born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. She began her artistic career as an amateur photographer and already participated in exhibitions at that time. In 1974, she began to study at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and graduated in 1978. She then moved to New York and frequently visited Berlin, where many of her pictures were taken. In her works, Goldin mainly deals with provocative and hard-hitting topics such as drug addiction and aids. Some of her pictures also deal with personal issues, since many of her sitters are actually her friends or acquaintances, whose lives and deaths are captured with the camera. (cbo)
