Item Details
Description
[Texas]. MAP OF TEXAS AND THE COUNTRIES ADJACENT. Compiled in the Bureau of the Corps of Topographical Engineers, From the Best Authorities. For the State Department. Under the direction of Colonel J. J. Abert, Chief of the Corps, by W. H. Emory, 1st Lieut. T. E. War Department 1844. 2 editions of the map were issued. This is the slightly larger version (Senate issue). At outer edge of border: 21 1/8” x 32 ½”. 2 adjoined sheets. Moderate foxing. Few marginal tears. Loss extending 3/8 inch past the center of the sheet’s right edge, but outside the border by more than ½ inch). More minor creasing and wear to some other locations along edges. “…this map exhibits the locations of the resettled Indian tribes west of the Mississippi-Missouri. A large, unnamed lake appears in place of Great Salt Lake. Westerly of that point the area of ‘Upper California’ is almost entirely bare of data, except along the coast, the Colorado and its tributaries being imperfectly delineated. Fremont’s routes up the Platte (both forks), as well as Major Long’s 1820 route appear in the “Proposed Ne-bras-ka Territory,” and St. Vrain’s Fort, Long’s Peak and ‘James Peak, or Pike’s’ are shown… The boundaries of Texas, as here shown, follow the ‘Rio Bravo del Norte or Rio Grande’ to its source (including Santa Fe, Taos and the New Mexican settlements east of that stream), thence North to 42 North Latitude, thence east to a point north of the source of the Arkansas, thence south to the Red River, and thereafter as defined by treaty… Emory was to become famous for his work in that Bureau.” –Wheat, TM, 478. Phillips (Maps) p844. At the time, there was dispute about whether Texas’s southwestern boundary was the Neuces River or the Rio Grande. This map’s original hand-colored outline shows Texas extending to the Rio Grande (as described above). Otherwise uncolored.
