Description
[Ancient Rome/Greece]. (Aulus Gellius). Auli Gellii NOCTES ATTICAE; Cum Selectis Novisque Commentariis, Et Accurata Recensione Antonii Thys I, J. C. & Jacobi Oisel I, J. C. Lugduni Batavorum, Ex Officina Petri Leffen, 1666. Thick 8vo. [46], 1129, [59] pp, lacking 2 preliminary leaves and 1 ending leaf. (The 23 preliminary leaves, or 46 preliminary pages, include the engraved title leaf which is part of the first gathering, the printed title leaf, 2-leaf dedication, 2-leaf “Lectori,” 8-leaf preface signed with a single asterisk, and 9-leaf table of contents. The ending material includes the 55-pages of indexes, 3-pages of Addenda, and 1 page of Errata.) Full vellum with yapp edges. (The binding is probably later, given the brightness of the small gilt crown and "P" at the center of the covers, but is clearly not modern. The leather labels are later than the binding, and the upper label overlays a title handwritten on the spine in sepia. The lower spine label supplies the date of the first printed edition, issued by Aldus in 1526.) Covers have the inevitable warping and only minor spotting. Incomplete pencil erasure to upper margin of title and front free endpaper, bookplate on front pastedown. Exterior and text very good.
