In the Second is shewed, The Causes of War, both Just and Uujust. In the Third is declared, What in War is Lawful; that is, Unpunishable. With Annotations digested into the Body of every Chapter. Translated into English by William Evats, B. D. ["Uunjust" is as the word appears on title page.] London: Printed by M. W. for Thomas Basset at the George in Fleetstreet, and Ralph Smith at the Bible under the Piazza of the Royal Exchange in Cornhill. M DC LXXXII. (1682.) Pagination: [title], [blank verso], i-xxi, [22]-[26], “Epistle to the Reader” [27]-[28], I-220, 361-572, [1]-[2], Index [3]-[32] pp. Collation: [title leaf], A2-[A3], a[1]-[a4], b[1]-[b4], c[1]-[c3], [1-leaf “Epsitle to the Reader”], B[1]-[2D4], 2E[1] – [2E6], 3A[1]- [4D3], Index [4D4], 4E[1]-[4L2], with the main portion of the text in 4’s except for 2E6 and the last 7 Index signatures which are 2 leaves each. Recased/cornered, with earlier leather covers retained and spine laid down. Paper spine label is later. Corners and edges of covers have some wear. Discoloration to lower portion of pp54-57. Chip to top of pp167-168, short tear to top of pp443-444 (not affecting text in either case). Worming at a tiny isolated point in headline beginning around p180, a bit more extensive in some portions appearing after p416. Some light dog-earing of pages. Interior very good. Wing G2126. ESTC R8527. First complete English translation of “De Juris de Bel et Pacis.” Elaborate engraved title.
