UNION GENERALS ENDORSE AN OFFICER
Letter seeking a position in a regiment commanded by Union Gen. ISAAC F. SHEPARD (d. 1889), with ten endorsements recommending the candidate on verso, four by other generals. The letter, by H. M. Leighton, 2pp. 4to., St. Louis, Nov. 18, 1862 seeks the position as Leighton had been rejected by the Navy due to his lack of sea time. In an initials four-line endorsement at conclusion, Shepard, who would later commend the African Brigade at Vicksburg, replies from Camp Steele in Mississippi on Nov. 28 making promotions and appointing Leighton a first lieutenant. On verso, among those recommending the man are Major Gen. SAMUEL R. CURTIS, Brig. Gen. EUGENE A. CARR, Brig. Gen. FRANK BLAIR, AAG WILLIAM D. WOOD, and others. Very good.
