Good content war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo. by Pvt. Alfred J. Battey [WIA Grand Coteau, La., 11/03/63], Co. C, 96th Ohio Vols., Vicksburg, Aug. 4, 1863. In part: "…the regiments are to be filled up with conscripts…we left camp on the 5th and our advance came up with Johnson's rear on the third day and harassed his rear considerably…the 10th we formed in line of battle and drove them into their works at Jackson. We lost one man in Co. K. killed and 5 wounded & one man sun struck, this was Jno. Tarr [died 7/11/63]…our brigade was in front at Jackson during the 7 days that Johnson sojourned there. There was no casualties in our Co. there was a shell burst and a piece bruised one of our boys arm's a little. I was laying right behind him. They throwed 4 as close as I cared…the rebs left in the night of the 16th setting the town on fire & now the state house is about all that remains of the Capital…we left J. on the 21st and arrived at our Old camping ground on the 23rd…". Very good.
