Description
OHIO SOLDIER EULOGIZES LINCOLN
A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred J. Battey [WIA Grand Coteau, La., 11/03/63], Co. C, 96th Ohio Vols., Baton Rouge, La., May 11, 1865. In part: "…they might be getting somebody else to act a commissary for…the best person dirties his clothes and…wears them out three times as fast as he would doing duty in the Co…about the assassination of our Chief Magistrate…you are better posted about than myself…America has lost a great President, a good statesman and an honest man. I could shed tears every time I think about it, but that wouldn't make it any different…I hope Davis and all concerned will be caught and be made to suffer the penalty of the deed…". Very good.
