Description
PICKETT'S CHARGE HERO IS PARDONED BY LINCOLN
Fine group of three printed Union general orders issued between July and September 1863 concerning the order for execution and pardon of Capt. Bernard J. McMahon 71st Pa. who shot and killed fellow officer Capt. Andrew McManus of the 69th Pa. on May 27, 1863. The first is 2pp. 8vo., "Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac, Camp near Berlin, Md.", July 16, 1863, in part: "...the said Captain Bernard J. McMahon, did on…May 27, 1863, shoot Captain Andrew McManus…thereby causing his death…to the specification-Guilty…therefore…Captain Bernard J. McMahon…to be shot to death with musketry…". The second two documents pardon Captain Bernard McMahon from execution and read, in part:"…the President of the United States. In consideration of all the circumstances…the gallant conduct of the accused, while a prisoner, in the recent battles at Gettysburg…the President is pleased to pardon Captain McMahon…". Overall very good.
