A rare antebellum partly-printed slave document, 1p. oblong 8vo., being a bill of lading, Baltimore, March 30, 1853, for the safe passage of a slave named Thomas Bishop. The document reads, in part: "Shipped by C. T. Maddox in and upon the good Barque Pamphylia whereof is master for the present voyage Dan'l. Shedd now riding at anchor in…Baltimore and bound for New Orleans…One slave named Thomas Bishop…to be delivered at…New Orleans…(the dangers of the Seas, and unavoidable escapes excepted…Messrs Kendall Yoe & Co….paying freight for the said slave Twenty dollars…". The first we have seen of a document such as this, with the word "Slave" being pre-printed upon the document. Set in a ca. 1920s frame. Very small damped area at top does not detract. The Pamphylia was a noted slaver. On 9/10th January 1860 she was detained by the HMS Triton with 700 slave on board, 200 youngsters. The slaves were removed to the Triton. and Pamphylia was sent to St. Helena for adjudication.
