Description
ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Important partly-printed D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, May 14, 1864, the appointment of William M. Wherry to serve as "Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Major", effective from May 12th. Boldly signed by Lincoln with a near-perfect signature at lower-right, also signed by his Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON. Some light mailing folds and light soiling which would easily clean-up, else very good and ideal for display. WILLIAM M. WHERRY (1836-1918) was a Medal of Honor recipient and career army officer who would retire a brigadier general. As a first lieutenant of the 3rd Missouri Vols. during the Civil War, Wherry also served as aide-de-camp to Nathaniel Lyon. He received the Medal of Honor for rallying his men under heavy fire at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861. He would be brevetted brigadier general and serve until his retirement in 1899. An important document, and the first appointment for an "aide de camp" we have encountered in nearly 30 years in the trade.
