(1796-1856) American politician and statesman from Delaware; U.S. Senator, Secretary of State. L.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. 4to., May 11, 1850, to Massachusetts Congressman Joseph Grinnell sending dispatches to Canton, China. In part: "…Agreeably to the request contained in the letter of Gideon Nye Jr…I transmit herewith a package for him, containing Dispatches for our Legation at Canton, with a special Passport, which I will thank you to forward to his address…". WITH a partly printed D.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. folio, May 4, 1850, passport issued to E.G. Higginbotham. Document is attached to its original leather case. The letter is in very good condition, the document shows moderate wear.
