Rare vintage gent`s stainless steel Universal Geneve Polerouter III wristwatch. Silver Universal Geneve dial with blue index ring and date at 3 o`clock. Swiss made, automatic movement. Screw down case back. Comes on a stainless steel Universal Geneve bracelet with the U logo clasp. Approximate diameter is 40.2mm with the crown. Overall condition is very good. Running at the time of inspection, however not checked for accuracy. An overhaul is always recommended for used watches.

In the 1950`s, Scandinavian Airline System (SAS) began flying from Europe to California via new routes over the North Pole. Universal Genève provided the SAS crews with automatic anti-magnetic wristwatches. These watches became the official chronometers of the SAS.

In 1954, Universal Genève introduced the Polarouter which was designed and created by Gerald Genta. In his later years, Genta created the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus for Patek Philippe. The Polarouter had an automatic calibre 138 SS with a pendular mass oscillating between two shock absorber. Soon after, the watch was renamed the Polerouter and fitted with the calibre 215 Microtor with a rotating mass incorporated in the movement. Several other Polerouter models were to follow: Polerouter, Polerouter de luxe, Polerouter Date, Polerouter Jet, Polerouter Super, Polerouter Genève, Polerouter Compact, Polerouter NS, Polerouter III, and Polerouter Sub.

The Universal Geneve Polerouter was a status of luxury. In the late 1950`s, a stainless steel Universal Geneve Polerouter had the same retail as a Rolex Explorer. A yellow gold Universal Geneve Polerouter Date with a yellow gold bracelet retailed for almost as much as a VW Beetle. Universal Geneve discontinued the Polerouter model in the 1990`s.
