The lithograph ‘Rosier milleénaire’ is the first of two sheets which were bound in the book ‘Max Ernst, 24 frottage’, as well as they were enclosed in the preferential edition as a suite. Printed in different colors, they also were published as single copies. Thus, the present sheet was printed in 15 copies in ocher on Japon nacré.


The lithograph Signed lower right in pencil ‘max ernst’ and numbered lower left in pencil ‘1’. The sheet is fixed to a backing board at the reverse upper sheet edges and bears an unobtrusive crease in the upper right corner. The sheet is overall in good condition. The frame indicates slight signs of wear. The image measures 16.3 x 10.6 cm, the sheet 38.7 x 28.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 59 x 49 cm


Max Ernst (1891–1976)

The German painter, printmaker and sculptor Max Ernst was co-founder of the DADA movement. In 1922, he moved to Paris, where he joined the circle of the Surrealists, before he immigrated to America in 1941. In 1953, he returned to France. Ernst is mainly recorded for his surrealist and fantastical paintings with mysterious creatures. He was the winner of the 27th Venice Biennale and participated in the documenta I, II and III in Kassel. Today, artworks by Max Ernst are on display in major museums collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, the Tate Gallery in London and the Staatliche Museen in Berlin.
