Richard Lindner (1901-1978)

A native of Hamburg, Richard Lindner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. The first activities as graphic designer and illustrator in Berlin and Munich followed. Lindner emigrated to Paris shortly after the takeover of Hitler, where he was interned into a detention camp and was assigned compulsory labor. In 1941, he succeeded in departing to New York, where he was able to quickly establish himself as a graphic designer again and received recognition for his paintings for his award-winning portrait of Immanuel Kant. An artist monograph of Lindner was published in 1961. Only a year later, the MoMA New York purchased his most famous painting ‘The Meeting’. His works were represented during his lifetime in various international exhibitions. In 1986, he took part in the documenta 4. Today, his works are in the possession of international museums, for example National Galleries of Scotland, Tate Gallery London, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum Madrid and Art Institute Chicago. (tm)
