The lithograph measures 14" x 10." The piece has some wear including slightly bent corners and some small stains throughout the image. However, the colors of the lithograph have remained extremely bold. This lithograph is not framed or matted. On March 9, 1862 that first battle between ironclad warships took place. Also known as the Battle of Hampton Roads, the battle was between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia previously known as the USS Merrimack. Civil War historians note that this battle marked an important change in naval warfare because of the use of ironclad warships. On March 8, the CSS Virginia began an attack on Union warships located in Hampton Roads. The Virginia which was a Northern produced ship, easily attacked the wooded Cumberland and later battled the USS Congress, which ended in an almost surrender for the Union ship. The USS Monitor was brought in the next day to combat CSS Virginia. The two steam- powered ironclad ships battled for several hours before the Confederate warship had to retreat.
