Item Details
Description
Cast iron George Washington dumb stove figure depicting a standing George Washington draped in cloak and holding a scrolled document in his left hand - 48"H x 14"W x 7"D - base plate 18.5" x 16.5". Circa 1847-1870. According to the Albany Institute of History and Art, the Washington dumb stove was designed by Alonzo Blanchard in 1843 (A. Blanchard 1799-1864 Albany, NY - Maker). Dumb stoves did not have a fire box but instead were connected via stove pipe to a room below where an active stove was present, that way providing heat to a room above. Note the base which Washington stands on has an opening for a stove pipe and Washington himself is cast in 2 section and held together by long screws.
