PROBYN DIGHTON: (1833-1924) English General, Victoria Cross winner for his numerous actions during the Indian Mutiny, 1857-58. Later Comptroller and Treasurer to King Edward VII when Prince of Wales 1877-91 and Extra Equerry to King Edward VII 1901-10. A.L.S., D. M. Probyn, three pages, 8vo, Sandringham, Norfolk, 26th December 1887, to Mr. Bath, a Coach builder. Probyn thanks his correspondent for having sent him some drawings, although has no orders to present him with. He continues 'I was disappointed with your sleigh. It is so crank like mine. I wonder why you did not take one of the Prince's sleighs as a pattern when you were building a new one?' and further writes 'One of these days I may ask you to build me a dog cart, similar to the one you last sent here (to Sandringham) only a trifle lighter perhaps, but I must do without it for another season, as money is "tight" just now with me, as it is with most people'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Probyn and signed by him with his initial ('D') in the lower left corner. Together with a second A.L.S., D. M. Probyn, one page, 8vo, Sandringham, Norfolk, 21st August 1888, also to Mr. Bath, asking him not to hurry over a step and to take his time, remarking 'If you cannot get it done by tomorrow, wait till next week'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Probyn and signed by him with his full signature to the lower left corner. One small stain to the second letter, just affecting a few words of text, but not the signature, and some light age wear. Some dust staining to the envelopes. About VG, 2 €125-190
