Description
CASTLEREAGH VISCOUNT: (1769-1822) Anglo-Irish Statesman, Foreign Secretary 1812-22 and a central figure in the coalition which defeated Napoleon. A.L.S., Castlereagh, two pages, 4to, Foreign Office, 30th November [1813], to Lord Burghersh, marked Private. Castlereagh apologises for any awkwardness that might have been experienced by Burghersh upon his arrival, remarking 'I highly approve the temperate and becoming manner in which you conducted yourself. I have no doubt Lord Aberdeen will make it pleasant to you, and I cannot too much applaud the tone of accommodation in which you express it yourself….' and continuing 'whilst he [Aberdeen] remains at Head Quarters the field is wide enough for both - Military matters in the larger sense are always amongst the most important objects for a Minister to attend to, they are in truth be considered essentially political - but this need not clash with your Reports'. Castlereagh concludes 'I have no doubt you will arrange your relative duties whilst together at the Head Quarters…' With blank integral leaf. Together with two fascinating lengthy contemporary manuscript copies of letters from Burghersh to Castlereagh, relating directly to the present letter, in which Burghersh expresses his concerns about Lord Aberdeen's treatment towards him, Frankfurt, 12th November & 11th December 1813, and also including a third contemporary manuscript copy of a letter from Burghersh to Aberdeen, Frankfurt, 11th November 1813. Some light age wear and a few minor, small holes to the central vertical folds, not affecting the text or signature, about VG, 4
