[STUART CHARLES]: (1779-1845) British Diplomat, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal and Brazil 1810-14, British Ambassador to France 1815-24, 1828-30 and British Ambassador to Russia 1841-44. A small collection of A.Ls.S., Ds.S. etc., 28 pages (total), 4to and folio, various places (mainly Lisbon), 1811-1813, all relating or sent to Charles Stuart, including an A.L.S. by Jeffery, 1st July 1812, regarding the situation of two Seamen in the Arsenal Jail, ‘one of them on a charge for mixing Poison in the Ships provisions, the other as a notorious thief and vagabond’ and recommending that they be sent to England on a ship of war; four A.Ls.S. by John Croft, 26th & 28th January and 14th February 1812, concerning farmers selling their cattle so as to avoid embargos and expressing fears of the consequential diminution of agricultural produce, also briefly referring to the Duke of Wellington and a white horse for the use of Stuart etc; an A.L.S. by Ripon (?), 6th September 1812, regarding instructions by order of the Duke of Wellington to give over to the Portuguese Government wheat, barley and salt meat for the month of September; a L.S. by A. T. Sampayo, 3rd September 1812, listing various American vessels from New York and Baltimore bringing produce from the United States and the insurance of £50,000 for the ships; an A.L.S. by Thomas Dunmore (?), 22nd May 1811, requesting Stuart assist in obtaining one hundred carts as quickly as possible for the transportation of two thousand sets of hospital bedding, etc. Some very light age wear, generally VG, 12 €125-190
