Item Details
Description
The very nice silver cane of George W. Almy, with a bowling theme. The "L" sterling handle is 2" high, 3 2/3" long and 1" thick. On one side it has the owners name: "Geo. W. Almy" in large, raised script. The opposite side is wonderfully detailed with a scene of a man bowling a ball down a lane of nine-pins. Additionally, there is a coiled snake that starts on the handle and then extends downward onto a barrel collar, in an unusual touch. The collar is also marked with an engraved small lion head logo and: "Lyon, Maker, Sterling", for the noted 19th Century silversmith and cane-maker. (Was this a prize for being the season's "Best Bowler"") The shaft is ebonized hardwood that ends with a 1" burnished brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 35 3/4" and the condition is very good. It is American, ca 1885, and it is a marvelous example from the fine collection of Dr. Michael Roth. Estimate: $900-$1300.
