Description
The great ivory and baleen nautical cane of Captain Bailey. The ivory handle is 2 1/3" high and 1 1/4" at its widest. The stem has baleen and ivory separators and is incised and decorated with a ring of leaves and berries. Additionally, it is inscribed: "Captn W. Bailey". (The owner was probably Captain William Bailey who was known to have commanded the Maine Brig Halcyon on a whaling voyage in 1843. See Google.) The baleen shaft is fashioned in stacked pieces and discs of differing configuration. It is octagonally fashioned and highlighted with ivory and silver spherules for 12", and then twist-carved for 9", also highlighted with spherules. The remainder is made of short, rounded pieces of stacked baleen, and the cane terminates with a 1/3" hand-made ferrous metal ferrule. The overall length is 34" and the condition is very good. It is American, ca 1850, and it is a very fine sailor-made example of the kind. Estimate: $3000-$5000. This lot is subject to shipping restrictions outlined in Terms and Conditions.
