Description
The very nice silver cane of Civil War Union veteran, Jacob Hess. The silver crook handle measures about 5" along the arc and is about 3/4" thick. It has a hammered texture on one side and is owner identified with large raised script on the other side: "Jacob Hess". Additionally, it is marked "Lyon Maker" with the lion head logo for the noted New York silversmith, and "Sterling" for the silver purity. Mr Hess fought for the Pennsylvania 20th Infantry and his soldier history and that of his unit will accompany this lot. The shaft is natural hardwood that ends with a 1 1/4" bi-metal ferrule. The overall length is 36 7/8" and the general condition is very good with minor denting on the handle and loss of bark on the shaft. It is ca 1880 and it a fine example of the kind. Estimate: $650-$850.
