Description
Quarter plate daguerreotype. Thermoplastic case affixed with a silver plaque engraved "Genl. Mooers, Plattsburgh, NY."

c. 1855 daguerreotype of an early painted portrait of General Benjamin Mooers (1758-1838), a politician and military veteran who served in both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Mooers participated in many important battles during the Revolutionary War and was present at the hanging of the British spy Major John André. During the War of 1812, Mooers commanded six brigades of the New York state militia at the Battle of Plattsburgh. For his service and gallantry during the battle, Mooers was presented a sword by the New York state assembly.

Important preserved likeness of an early, prominent American figure.
