Description
A great carved wood cane of Lincoln. The dark stained hardwood "L" handle is 2 1/2" high, 4 1/4" to the side, and 2" at its thickest. At the shaft end of the handle, a nicely detailed face of Abraham Lincoln is carved, while at the opposite end, "1877" is incised. The shaft is tan hardwood randomly stained with blotches as highlights. A 1 1/8" spent brass cartridge shell acts as a "make do" ferrule. The overall length is 36 1/3" and the condition is very good. It was probably made by a Civil War veteran who was a Lincoln admirer, perhaps for an 1877 reunion of Union comrades. It is a fine hand-fashioned and dated example of the kind. Estimate: $1000-$1500.
