A fine antique Asian painting mounted on a hanging scroll. The painting depicts "Shakyamuni's Entrance into Perfect Nirvana". A Japanese type of painting based on Indian models. The dying Shakyamuni Buddha, who at this moment is entering the "perfect nirvana". At the top right, Buddha's mother, Maya, floats down from heaven on the cloud where she has remained since her death, dying seven days after giving birth to Shakyamuni. The painting measures 13.75" x 9-7/8". The scroll is decorated with a stylized cloud motif and measures 41.5" x 15.5". Etched gilt brass clips at the top corners and gilt bronze / brass end caps etched with flowers.
