Description
Lot of 5 ancient terracotta animal items. The first is a Chinese terracotta reclining horse, Tang Dynasty, AD 619 - 906, intact with legs detailed on the sides, traces of slip, L: 4 1/8 in (10.5 cm). The second is a Greek terracotta head of a lion or panther, Ptolemaic Egypt, c. 3rd - 2nd Century BC, H: 7/8 in (24mm). Ex Chicago private collection; A pair of terracotta animals - Greek & Syrian. The first is a small Proto-Geometric humped bull, with incised detail and well-preserved surfaces, L: 1 ¾ in (4.4cm). The second piece is a terracotta quadruped, Syria, c. 1000 - 800 BC, with stylized form and wearing a thick collar, H: 3 in (7.6cm). The first with a few minor chips to the nose and tips of horns, the second with some restoration. Both mounted on antique wooden bases Ex Charles Ryan collection, early 20th Century. A Greek Bull protome, c. 5th - 4th Century BC, with three holes for mounting, H: 3 3/4 in (9.5 cm). Has some minor losses and mounted to antique wooden base with a label that reads 'Terracotta Head Of An Ox, An Apis Bull?'. Ex Charles Ryan collection, early 20th Century.
