A Near Eastern stone head of a lion, c. 3rd Millennium BC, nicely carved in a colorful light orange-tan marbled stone, the eyes with inlaid iris and pupil in a dark stone (remaining in one), the brows carved for inlay and the mouth deeply detailed with pointed teeth. The mane is very naturalistically rendered with protruding ears, holes at the top- and back of the head, mostly likely for a headrest of some kind in another substance. Three holes bored into the base for attaching the piece presumably to a body. A very attractive and interesting piece, probably from a large composite figure or scene. H: 3 7/8 in (9.8cm).
