A pair of ceramic avian ocarinas from Costa Rica and Colombia. The first is from Tairona, Colombia, c. AD 500 - 1000, and in the form of a dove. Crème slip with hind portion in burnished black. Two note holes on side with incised design on back. 4 5/8 in x 2 ½ in (11.8 x 6.4 cm). The second is in the form of a parrot, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, c. AD 1000 - 1500, with pale orange burnished surfaces, two note holes on either side and another pair on the back of the neck. 3 in x 3 ¼ in (7.6 x 8.2 cm). Both intact with light deposits. Ex Dr. E.
