Item Details
Description
An early twentieth century five piece silver tea service, comprising a spirit kettle with stand and burner, a teapot, twin-handled sugar bowl, milk jug and cream jug, each piece of squat, bulbous form with gadroon rim above a part lobed body to a circular footed base, the handles moulded with snake head and tail terminals, fruitwood mounts to the kettle and teapot, the kettle further resting on a stand with three foliate capped cabriole legs leading to shell feet. Hallmarked Mappin & Webb Ltd., London 1915, milk jug hallmarked Sheffield 1916, same maker. Maximum height of kettle measures 11 3/4 inches (30 cm), gross combined weight 110.96 ozt (3451.5 grams).
Condition
The lot appears in good overall condition, all pieces displaying some general wear including surface scratches, marks and some tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Hinged lids appear in working order, however there are some splits, cracks and repairs to the finials. On the teapot, the wooden section of the handle is a little loose. One of the keys on the stand is a possible replacement as it has a different maker's mark. The hallmarks are clear and legible, just some slight rubbing. Corresponding part hallmarks. Also with impressed maker's name to the underside of each.
