GENETIQUE
signed J.D. with date 64 (lower middle)
marker on paper
7 1/2 by 8 1/2 in.

Literature:
M. Loreau, "Catalogue des travaux de Jean Dubuffet: fascicule XX: L’Hourloupe I", Paris, 1966, no. 303 (illustrated).
Fascinated by the art of children and the insane, Jean Dubeffet gained worldwide recognition for coining the term and pioneering the movement Art Brut, in which he executed crude images and violent energy into rough impasto surfaces made of materials such as sand, plaster, tar, gravel, and ashes bound with varnish and glue. As part of his practice, Dubuffet also created assemblage works from discarded or organic materials, such as his 1957 work Door with Couch-grass, which is composed chiefly of fragments of paintings, grass, and pebbles. In the 1960's he experimented with musical composition and architectural environments, and in his later years he produced large fiberglass sculptures for public spaces.
