Title: 17th century English manuscript on "Algebra" on fine, thick paper
Place Published: Britain
Publisher:
Date Published: 17th century
Description:
151 numbered leaves, handwritten in brown ink (though a few are blank). (folio) 35.5x25 cm. (14x9¾"), period calf, rebacked with later calf, raised spine bands, later endpapers.
Unusually large and handsome ink manuscript mathematics text, in a clear, legible hand on thick paper with red pen borders throughout; probably created for a nobleman's son. It begins with two plus pages of "Institutions of Arithmetick By way of Preface," then followed by "Rules of Decimall Ariithmetick," "Introduction to Agebra, of Equation," "Questions of Algebra," plain geometry (though still under a heading of algebra), "Of the Sections of the Cone," "Of Superficies and Solids," "Collections on Archimedes," etc. A fascinating look at the 17th century mathematical mind. English mathematics manuscripts of this quality are quite rare.
