(8vo) later three-quarter "autumn leaf" binding of crushed and laminated morocco with green, red, and yellow dyes in the grain and a gilt and green patterned cloth, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, matching endleaves, top edge gilt, original front and spine cloth bound in. First American Edition, later Issue.
Later state of the first edition of one of the classics of American literature, exhibiting the following states: title leaf is conjugate with [1]7 (third state); the illustration captioned "Him and another Man" [p.13] listed at p.87 (second state); 11th line from bottom of p.57 reads "...with the saw..." (second state); p. 283 is a conjugate leaf, with corrected engraving (fourth state); final 5 in p.155 is slightly larger and a bit below the preceding 5 (third state); third state of the frontispiece portrait (imprint of Photo-Gravure Company., table cloth not visible). Leaf 23-8 not retained when rebound. BAL 3415.
