Ralph, Lord Cromwell had a varied career in royal service. He started under the patronage of Thomas Duke of Clarence, fought at the battle of Agincourt and was probablly present at the death of Joan of Arc. In 1433 he became treasurer of England, a position he held for ten years. Later he joined with Richard Duke of York. Maud Cromwell, daughter of the first Baron Cromwell married William Fitzwilliam Kt. in 1377.
